Study Notes

What is a “Worldview”?

A worldview is the framework of our most basic beliefs that shapes our understanding of the world and is the basis for our values, priorities, attitudes and actions.

Four Critical Concerns…

Four Critical Questions…

Determining Right and Wrong: 2 Basic Options

  1. Teleological Systems
  2. Deontological Systems
Teleological systems are ends oriented. Right and wrong are subjective and are determined by whether or not a moral choice helps achieve a desired end, such as perceived human happiness or pleasure.
Deontological systems are rules oriented. Right and wrong are objective and are determined by adherence to a given set of rules or obligations.

Biblical Worldview: Morality

  • Right and wrong lie within the nature of God
  • God is right
  • That which varies from God’s nature and will is wrong
  • Human knowledge of right and wrong is derived from revelation and conscience
  • God’s law gives us detailed knowledge of right and wrong
  • The two fundamental laws are love God and love others

Critical Concerns: Morality

  • Because humans are created in the image of God, we are moral beings who can know objective right and wrong.
  • God has given human beings a conscience which, when properly functioning, bears witness to right and wrong.
  • The Word of God reproves, corrects and trains in righteousness.

Applying the Text

  • How do you determine right and wrong?
  • Is the Word of God training you in righteousness?
