Who wrote it?

Solomon and Others

When was it written?

About 971 BC – 686 BC

Why was it written?

To instruct and exhort God’s people to shun folly and embrace wisdom

What are its main themes?

  • The nature of wisdom, and the blessing found in wise living
  • The nature of folly, and the devastating consequences of foolish living

What is a proverb?

A short, pithy statement that expresses a practical truth

What is wisdom?

The ability to discern or judge what is true, right or lasting

Understanding the Text: The Purpose of the Proverbs (Pr 1:1-6)

  • Attain wisdom (Pr 1:2)
  • Acquire a disciplined life (Pr 1:3)
  • Instruct the simple and the young (Pr 1:4)
  • Increase the understanding of the wise (Pr 1:5-6)
  • The Beginning of Wisdom (Pr 1:7)

Fear of the LORD…

A profound awe and respect for the nature and power of God… and a sobering acknowledgment that God’s holiness, judgment and discipline are a consuming fire
