Doctrine: Discipline

Biblical discipline is God’s loving correction and training of His people so that they grow in holiness, obedience, and faith. It is not merely punishment – it is formative, fatherly training designed to shape the character of those who belong to Him.

Biblical Discipline…

  • flows from God’s love
  • is different from condemnation
  • has several purposes
    • correct sin
    • train in holiness
    • produce spiritual fruit
    • teach dependence on God
  • can take many forms
    • Consequences of our actions
    • Spiritual conviction
    • Correction through Scripture
    • Rebuke from other believers
    • Circumstantial hardship
    • Loss of comfort or stability
  • requires a proper response
NOT ignoring it, or resenting it…
    RATHER, humble submission and repentance
  • is evidence of true belonging to God

Applying the Text

  • Reject fear of man and embrace fear of the LORD
  • Trust in God’s promises
  • Endure discipline with faith and hope
