"In the 1960's, our best and brightest declared that 'God is dead.' (Dead? I didn't even know He was sick. I would have sent a card). They said the 'concept of God' was an outmoded idea that belonged to the superstitions and ignorance of the past. Since we lived in a modern, enlightened era, it was time to put aside silly notions of a Supreme Being and get on with the business of declaring ourselves the mere end product of billions of years of mindless evolution. It was time to enter the brave new world of glorious human worth and achievement with ourselves as final arbiters of all truth and moral values."
